Panasonic to Develop Prosumer 3D Production System
Japanese electronics manufacturer Panasonic recently announced plans to develop a new 3D camera system, showing a concept model at this year’s NAB show in Las Vegas.
The camera will be based on the architecture of its hugely popular HVX200(A) camcorder, the first sub $7k camera to offer full HD resolution at variable frame rates. The new 3D acquisition model will have twin-fixed-lenses and will record 2 channels of full HD onto 16GB and 32GB P2 cards.
In comparison with existing 3D camera rigs, the forthcoming Panasonic model will offer greater maneuverability in its lightweight design, but will likely sacrifice control over its 3D effect. Mirror rigs like P+S Technik’s allow fine tuning of the stereo pairing because of the ability to manipulate each lens independently of the other.
Panasonic has been busy with 3D announcements over the past few months, including news of an improved 3D Plasma display and the opening of a California lab devoted to the development of Blu-ray 3D DVDs.
